Mayors Proclaim July 1-7 as "Independents Week" in Celebration of Locally Owned Businesses

Proclamations from Mayor Ralph Becker of Salt Lake City, Mayor Mike Winder of West Valley City and Mayor Tom Dolan of Sandy City. On Tuesday, July 2 at 4 pm, Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams will issue an official proclamation at the Salt Lake County Council Meeting, saluting the community contributions of independent businesses. In doing so, the Mayor will join with mayors from across the state of Utah: Mayor Ralph Becker of Salt Lake City, Mayor Mike Caldwell of Ogden, Mayor Mike Winder of West Valley City, Mayor Tom Dolan of Sandy, Mayor Cherie Wood of City of South Salt Lake, Mayor Lori Nay of Gunnison City, and Mayor Dave Sakrison of Moab in officially recognizing Independents Week in their respective municipalities. Independents Week, July 1-7, is celebrated by communities across the nation in recognition of the value and vitality of independent businesses. “Salt Lake County has numerous local, independent businesses that provide jobs and a unique shopping experience that helps maintain our sense of community,” said Mayor Ben McAdams. “I’m pleased that we’re showcasing their important contributions during ‘Independents Week 2013’.” During Independents Week, Local First Utah is releasing new statewide study data by Civic Economics detailing the amount of revenue returned to the local economy by locally owned, independent businesses. “Buying local is a great stabilizer of our economy and encourages pride in our citizens,” said Mayor Mike Caldwell of Ogden, which was a focus area of the economic study series. ”Let us unite this “Independents Week” by shopping and eating in Ogden City. Let’s get those dollars circulating again and again through local businesses, homes and the hands or our residents.” Dozens of Local First Utah Partner Businesses from across the state are celebrating Independents Week as well. Throughout the week, participating businesses will have "I Buy Local First" bumper stickers available to customers.
