How to Keep the Winter Cold Out of Your Home

The winter is almost upon us. And that means, it’s time to make sure your home has what it takes to keep you and your family warm all winter long. A variety of factors can lead to the loss of heat in your home. In order to ensure that you are retaining your home’s heat – and saving money – we recommend you take the following steps.

SEAL GAPS AROUND DOORS & WINDOWS

Your windows, baseboards and doors are prime sources for losing heat. So, one of the first things we recommend is that you inspect all your windows, baseboards and doors for any gaps that require sealing. This is a relatively simple and quick fix that could dramatically increase energy efficiency in your home. We also recommend replacing all windows in your home that are least 20 years old. Modern windows are much more energy efficient, and could save you a great deal of money in the long-run. We’d be happy to come out to your home, inspect your windows, and let you know which ones need replacing.

INSULATE THE ATTIC

Adding insulation to the attic is another important step that we recommend for ensuring an energy efficient home. Much of your home’s heat is lost through your roof. So, keeping your attic properly insulated is vital. Spray foam attic insulation is more expensive than batt fiberglass insulation, however, spray foam insulation provides a much tighter seal and air barrier. With that said, we highly recommend spending the extra cash to get the spray foam. In addition to the better sealant qualities, the spray foam gives the same R-value with fewer inches; thereby, giving you more overhead room.

FIREPLACE AND CHIMNEY INSULATIONPREPARE DOORS AND WINDOWS FOR WINTER

If you decide not to use your fireplace this winter, we suggest that you seal your chimney. There are several ways to seal your chimney, including the use of weather-stripping or high temperature resistant caulk to seal the gaps around the fireplace doors. Or you can fill the flue with a tightly rolled piece of batt insulation or you can fill the flue with an inflatable plug.

If you are using your fireplace, utilize a fireback. It can protect your fireplace’s back wall from extreme heat, while also maximizing the amount of heat reflected back into your home. You can either purchase a fireback, or make your own fireback using a stainless steel sheet.

FLOORS AND RUGS

Through the process of conduction, heat in your home will move through solid objects such as your floor. So, instead of allowing heat to escape your home, we recommend that you place rugs throughout the house on any bare surfaces, including hardwood floors, tile, and concrete. Heat loss through your floors can be significant, so don’t let the heat slip away and your energy bills surge. It’s a simple solution. Buy some rugs, and cover up the floors.

INSULATE ELECTRICAL OUTLETS

Your home’s exterior electrical outlets are another source of potential energy loss. Many people forget to think about insulating their exterior electrical outlets. But, we are here to remind you. In this day and age, saving your money is more important than ever. So, don’t let your money fly out the door. Take a look at your home’s exterior electrical outlets, and insulate them with some thin foam insulation pads.

WRAP THE WATER TANK

Another place that you can save some energy costs is with your water tank. Your hot water tank provides with you with the necessary hot water your family needs. However, a lot of the heat is lost through the space around the tank. In order to prevent that, we recommend that you wrap your tank. You can either purchase an inexpensive wrap specifically designed for water tanks, or you can use the old-fashioned, but effective, method of using a blanket and tape. Either method you chose, you will be glad you did it.

UPGRADE WALL INSULATION

Many homes, both old and new, are not built in the most energy efficient fashion. And even though newer homes most likely have more insulation than older homes, your new home could still use some more insulation. So, we recommend that all homeowners consider upgrading their wall insulation. You can simply put your hands to the wall, and if it feels cold to the touch, you probably have low-levels of insulation, and are a prime candidate for adding more insulation.

The Flag Was Still There

Standing firm against a backdrop of Utah’s magnificent summer skies is a stadium holding thousands of energetic fans. A warm breeze cools the neck of athletes ready to play in the first of a series of baseball games. Salty popcorn and sweet churros offer a complimentary need for a gulp of cold soda. The crowd’s rumbling shifts momentarily as a single performer approaches the mound. Unlike the athletes who will compete in America’s pastime, this artist needs only four minutes to share a uniting victory with the entire crowd.

“O say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,”

Francis Scott Key penned these famous lyrics during the war of 1812. As an attorney he raised a truce flag and gained entrance to Britain’s flagship vessel in order to negotiate a release of his friend who had recently been imprisoned for aiding the arrest of British soldiers. While Key’s desires were met and his friend was set free, he had also gained knowledge of Britain’s impending attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore. He was detained to prevent the ambush from becoming known. He spent the night of September 13th helplessly watching the attack from eight miles away, onboard the enemies’ ship.

“Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?”

In the darkened night great storms of artillery lit up the sky. For more than 25 hours masses of ammunition attempted to shred apart the Union’s strong hold. “It seemed as though mother earth had opened and was vomiting shot and shell in a sheet of fire and brimstone,” Key later wrote. And yet throughout the tumultuous battle the hand stitched American flag, lovingly crafted by 29 year old seamstress Mary Young Pickersgill, at the request of Major George Armistead, who wanted to boldly declare United State’s possession of this key battleground, stood stalwartly as morning’s glorious rays shone upon the American Fort McHenry.

“And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
“Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;”

Do you want a gift that does nothing?

Are you looking for that perfect something for your loved one? Why not consider the gift that does nothing. At Advanced Window Products all of our replacement windows are filled with Argon, the laziest of all natural elements that won’t change for anything.

Argon is the third most common gas in the Earth’s atmosphere. Argon comes from a Greek work that means, “lazy” or “inactive.” No really, that’s exactly what Argon does…. or doesn’t do… nothing. It has almost no chemical reactions, which is why it used in gas form to insulate the windows from fluctuating temperature. Argon prevents the heat from the summer rays, or the chill from the winter cold to seep through the glass and change the temperature on the inside of your home.

If you were to physically touch the windows on the inside of a home, when it was 20 degrees outside, a typical single-pane clear window will be 31 degrees on the inside. A double paned window will feel like 51 degrees. However, with the argon, triple silver coated windows that we provide, your home will feel a balmy 60 degrees on the inside, before you begin heating your house. If the temperature drops to negative 20 degrees outside, your windows are going to still be 52 degrees on the inside! That’s a temperature barrier of 72 degrees!!

So, when you are searching for a product that does amazing things for your home’s aesthetics, energy costs, and durability, choose a product that does nothing. Argon couldn’t be bothered to let anything disturb its natural state. Make sure to ask for windows that insulate your home from fluctuating temperatures with argon.

Call Advanced Window Products today for your free estimate on sound eliminating windows. Not only will you love what you see, but we think you’ll love the warm temperature of your house too!

The Magical Influence of a Mother

During many days of my life I have enjoyed what I call, “whoa” moments. These are moments of life that take my breath away, typically after a big change, or transition. Its a surreal feeling that my dreams are actually coming true.  I felt this sensation after I became a Mrs., and again the feeling came upon me when I bore my first child. “Whoa! I can’t believe I am a Mother!” I can’t believe that this little precious person is completely dependent upon me for physical, spiritual and emotional nourishment. She would in time, repay my efforts a thousand fold in her own special ways: milk bubble burps, the gift of finally sleeping through the night, cuddling with me in the way that I know the two of us fit together perfectly, preferring my touch and comfort to anyone else in the whole world.
